History

Doctoral Program of Political Islam-Political Science was found in 2006 as one of programs at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), one of the best private universities in Indonesia. The establisment of this program was motivated to abolish the gap between hope and reality in the field of Islam and politics. Some universities focus on normative and historical politics in Islamic countries, while the others take recent phenomena of modern politics. For this reason, Political Islam-Political Science applies the combinations of various approaches to the issues of political Islam.

In 2010, Doctoral Program of Political Islam-Political Science was given “B” accreditation by National Acrreditation of The Ministry of National Education of Republic of Indonesia. This program has developed rapidly and received “A” accreditation in 2016. The development is not only in academic issue, but also in the facilitation. Doctoral Program of Political Islam-Political Science now has its own sufficient office in the graduate building for lecturers, staff, as well as student. The rapid development of the program can been seen in the international network with several universities from abroad through several programs such as international conference, joint research, and visiting scholar. In addition, Doctoral Program of Political Islam-Political Science has foreign students.

With other majors in Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Doctoral Program of Political Islam-Political Science established Jusuf Kalla School of Government (JKSG) in 2011, Ahmad Syafii Maarif School of Political Thought and Humanity (ASMPTH) in 2015, and Mahathir Global Peace School (MGPS)-Institude of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) in 2016.
Through these improvements, Doctoral Program of Political Islam-Political Science remains to continue the development of teaching, curriculum, research, and facilities for obtaining the highest standard.
