Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) once again produced a doctoral graduate in the doctoral promotion session held on Thursday (12/26) at the Kasman Singodimedjo Building, UMY Central Campus. This time the doctoral session was held to promote a Lecturer of the Sharia Department of Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Fattahul Muluk Jayapura, Faisal Saleh.
In his presentation, Faisal explained that there was a problem of special autonomy policy for indigenous Papuans which gave birth to many contradictions and factions in society. Papuans are given a right in the form of unlimited access to various resources, while migrants must be willing to accept the reality of being second-class people. On one hand, this special autonomy has provided space for indigenous Papuans to be able to actively participate and determine various policies for Papua, but on the other hand, ethnic migrants have been positioned as beneath indigenous Papuans.
Based on that issue, Faisal themed of his dissertation research “Negotiation of Cultural Values of Muslim Migrants in Jayapura Regency of Papua”. In the dissertation, Faisal Saleh explained how Muslim migrants were able to survive even though many were pressured by the special autonomy in Papua “The Muslim migrants were able to survive through several strategies. They managed to find a place for themselves in the middle of the Papua social dynamics by adapting to local Papuan government and making use of their relations with locals in the social, economic, and political aspects.” Faisal explained.
Faisal Saleh successfully graduated as the 111th doctor of UMY with a cum laude predicate, a GPA of 3.66 and a study period of 4 years 4 months 9 days. The doctoral promotion was attended by Prof. Dr. Abdul Munir Mulkhan, S.U as the promoter, Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc as Co-promotor and the testing team of Dr. Hasse Jubba, M.A, Dr. Dyah Mutiarin, M.Sc, Dr. Zuly Qodir, M.Ag, and Dr. Drs.
