Counter-Terrorism Policy in Indonesia after 9/11: Constructivist Analysis

The international world has developed the norm “war on terror” after the events of 9/11. The Indonesian government is on the global agenda on “war on terror”, and has adopted a repressive approach that has resulted in many human rights violations in the process of combating terrorism.
As delivered by Ardli Johan Komara in the Closed Dissertation Examination held by the Political Doctoral Study Program in Islam-Political Science, Friday (8/30) at the Study Hall Postgraduate Floor Lt. 1 UMY Integrated Campus. His dissertation entitled “Counter-Terrorism Policy in Indonesia After the 9/11 Incident: Constructivist Analysis” was presented before the examining team.
Ardli explained the factors influencing the Indonesian government’s repressive policies in the context of anti-terrorism include: First, Countries that are pioneers of a global “war on terror” agenda such as the United States and Australia have offered material assistance which then rationalized government choices Indonesia to join the global agenda “war on terror”. Second, international structural institutions, in this case, the United Nations. The Indonesian state which is a member of the United Nations must, of course, follow the stipulations (resolutions) that have been established relating to counter-terrorism governance both at the international and national levels. The Indonesian government has ratified several international conventions related to anti-terrorism, which forced the government to follow international provisions in dealing with the issue of terrorism in Indonesia.
He added Third factor, international law norms, anti-terrorism norms that developed in the international world had given birth to international legal instruments which certainly bind countries that have become part of the international community, especially for countries that have legitimized the international legal instruments. Fourth, the perception or interpretation by the Indonesian government of terrorism that is formed by the influence of ideas or shared ideas that develop in international relations, as well as the experience of the Indonesian government in dealing with the threat of terrorism.
