Focus Group Discussion: Islam, Citizenship, and Indonesia

(Yogyakarta, 10 January 2020) – The Study Program of Political Islam-Political Science, Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University, held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the theme of Islam and Citizenship in Indonesia. This FGD was motivated by the concern over the rise of unilateral actions that negated the citizenship of a person, group, and community recently in Indonesia. This issue is critical considering that Indonesia is not only known as a country that has the largest Muslim population in the world but also a country that has very diverse social backgrounds (multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, etc.). This predicate at the same time places Indonesia as the only country that has a varied social experience but is still able to manage it well so that it is far from conflict as occurs in various countries that have different societies. This FGD is part of an international collaborative research project initiated by the Study Program of Political Islam-Political Science, Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University, and Boston University USA.
This FGD was attended by several experts, namely Dr. Moh. Najib Azca, (UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Expert in the Post-Conflict Islamic Movement); Dr. Dicky Sofyan (ICRS UGM, Minority Muslim Expert); 3. Dr. Inayah Rohmaniyah, (UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Expert in Islamic Movement); Dr. Moh. Azhar, Expert in Islamic Thought); Dr. Nina Mariani Noor (UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Muslim Minority Expert); Dr. Abdul Gafar Karim, (UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Political Citizenship Expert); and Prof. Al Makin (UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Expert of the Mnirotas Group). In addition to these speakers, and Indonesians and also a researcher who is very well known in Indonesia, Prof. Robert W Hefner was present as an expert as well as Chairman of the International Collaborative Research Research Team in collaboration between the S3 Politics of Politics and Political Sciences at UMY and Boston University USA. The team member and the person in charge of the activity are Dr. Zuly Qodir, Dr. Hasse Jubba, and Dr. Mega Hidayati from S3 Political Islam-Political Science UMY. The duration of the research itself is one year and will be discussed for the continuation of the study in the following years.
In this FGD, more experts were directed to respond to various actual issues that are currently happening in Indonesia, such as minority issues, Islamic Movement, Islamic political Movement, and problems that are strictly related to the condition of Indonesia in the past decade. Various violations in the community, such as the denial of the existence of minority groups, have become the focus of attention for experts. Likewise, issues that have evolved in higher education, such as the emergence of a new awareness of Islam among students. This FGD ultimately also provides an important note that what all parties should be part of all the dynamics of life, including the dynamics of religious, social, political, and economic life in contemporary Indonesia by always promoting the spirit of humanity for the common good.
