Lately, Indonesia seem to be in an emergency regarding ‘radical’ and ‘radicalism’. Radicalism which is attributed to terrorism has become the main issue that should be addressed. This issue should be studied through a sociological perspective to explain the problem of radicalization in Indonesia in depth. The Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Board Dr. H. Haedar Nashir, M.Sc., raised the discussion at the inaugural speech of his Professor Title Bequeathment Ceremony at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta on Thursday (12/12).
A number of figures were present at the inauguration of Professor Haedar, such as former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, former Muhammadiyah Central Board Chairman Buya Syafii Maarif, and former Minister of Marine and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti. Also present were Coordinating Minister for PMK Muhadjir Effendy, Minister of Religion Fachrul Razi, Chairman of the PAN as well as Deputy Speaker of the Republic of Indonesia RI Zulkifli Hasan, Secretary General of PDI Perjuangan Hasto Kristiyanto, PAN Politician Hanafi Rais, Deputy Governor of DIY KGPAA Paku Alam X, and Inspector General of Kapolda DIY Ahmad Dofiri..
Haedar Nashir was inaugurated as the 14th UMY professor after delivering a speech with a discussion on Indonesian Moderation and Indonesian Identity: Perspective of Sociology, at the UMY Central Campus Sportorium. According to Haedar, the vigilant narratives of ‘jihadists’, ‘Khilafah’, ‘wahabi’, should be accompanied by various policies of widespread deradicalization in the public . “There are mosques, campuses, state-owned enterprises, majelis taklim chambers, and even Early Childhood Education Institutions (PAUD) that are exposed to radicalism so strongly and openly in public space that it causes national controversy,” he said.
Radicalism is not a simple problem in any aspect in various countries, which means it requires a broad and deep understanding so that people know how to deal with it. ” interpreting radicalism as synonymous with violence attributed to terrorism is mistaken. History shows that radicalism occurs in many aspects in all social groups,” he explained.
After the Reformation period, Indonesia underwent a process of radicalism in ideology through liberalism and new capitalism, which are more complicated than religious radicalism in daily life. Ideological, Political, Economic, and Cultural Radicalism is as problematic as Religious Radicalism and Extremism for the future of Indonesia.
“Indonesia must be able to solve the problem of radicalism in political, economic, cultural and religious life in order to move forward and stick to its national foundations, souls, thoughts and ideals. I would like to provide an alternative of moderation as an alternative method of deradicalization which is more in line with Pancasila as a neutral ideology while promoting the moderate character of the Indonesian nation to become a strategic reference in dealing with radicalism in Indonesia, “said Prof. Haedar, who is also a lecturer at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of UMY.
The moderation of Indonesia and Indonesian values were considered an objective way in all aspects of national life such as politics, economy, culture, and religion. Indonesia must be freed from all forms of radicalism and the extreme pull towards liberalization, secularization and orthodoxy. “Radicals cannot be fought with radicalsl As in the strategy of radicalization versus radicalization and radicalism versus radicalism. Indonesia has to overcome radicalism in various aspects of its life, including religious radicalism, “he concluded.
Former Vice-President of Indonesia Jusuf Kalla agreed with the speech delivered by Haedar Nashir in his inaugural professor’s speech, as radicalism is indeed a challenge that must be faced in the current Indonesian society. “We all agree that what Mr. Haedar conveyed is very important, because radicalism is currently an important issue among the public. Radicalism is a new thought that they consider to be critical, as he mentioned that the reformation was also a process of radicalism, as was the new order. Hopefully the discussion presented earlier will make us think and apply moderation as a middle way to face radicalism.
